Dropping the penny into the canoe will raise the level of the water in the pool more. Basically straight into the pool the water is raised proportionally to its volume, however, in the canoe it has to displace water equivalent to the pennies mass which converting to volume is more. the current volume of a penny is 0.348 cm^3 its Mass is 2.5g or 2.5 cm^3, so adding 2.5 cm^3 into the pool will raise the water level more than adding 0.346 cm^3.
